Taylor's Booth Designing Competition

Competition stages:

1st stage
Conceptual designs of the booths in the form of A3 sketches, with relevant information and design intentions.
Submission date : 12th March, 1pm, Studio 9

2nd stage
The top 4 winning groups will then produce drawings (elevations, plan, sections) with the materials chosen for their booth listed in them either hand drawn, or with the aid of AutoCAD, 3DMax and others in a 1:10 scale. It is compulsory to produce a model added that the drawings are clear enough to show the whole design. Participants will then be required to present their schemes to the judges. Each group would be given 10 minutes to convey their message.
Submission date : 9th April

3rd stage
The winning team will then construct a 1:1 scale model in conjunction with the PAM camp competition.

Criteria and Requirements:

- Each group must consist of approx 3 to 5 students. The competition is opened to all SABD students,
therefore it is highly recommended that there be a mixture of students from AT, ID, QS and CM.

- Registration fee of RM1 PER PERSON must be paid upon registration.

-Booth must represent Taylor’s University College (eg, using SABD/ Taylor’ logo)
- The booth must have space to display models, storyboards and portfolios.
- Space area for booth is 2x2x2m. Final model need not make full use of space, but it must be able
to prove sufficient space for at least 20 students’ works while the remaining spaces can be used
to place leaflets, brochures and other promotional materials, subject to designer’s creativity.
- Materials should be cost effective and readily available.
- The winning team will build the 1:1 scale model before they obtain the cash prize.
- The bill of the booth is borne by the winners using the RM 400 cash prize.
Anything above the allocated sum is to be forked out from the participants themselves.
- Clarity and neatness of submission is up to own discretion, but must be able to communicate ideas
on the design of the booth.
- Submission for stage one will be handed to Chew Kar Weng at Studio 9 by 1pm.

RM 700 cash prize, feature in SABD blog, SABD merchandises.

REPORT [FEEDBACK]

Regarding the complain letter to Mr. Tony dated 10th February 2009, the reply is as follows:

1) software upgrades: SABD is not obliged to upgrade computer softwares unless requested by lecturers when and if they deem the older version is no longer adequate for teaching. That said, students who still insist on upgrades may want to personally discuss with lecturers responsible for subject such as AutoCad and 3ds Max.

2) Digilab:

• Due to concerns on game playing in digilab, the Digilab cannot be 24/7 accessible. However, occupation hours may be extended till 8pm as oppose to the existing 6pm.
  
• b) SABD too is now currently working on making the application form for usage of lab facilities permission easier whereby the process will now be an internal affair (only through the Program Office), hence, students are no longer required to visit the PRD office to attain signature from so-so. However, due to it being the LCS management security grounds, please note that this possible change has yet to be confirmed by Mr. Tony.

Open Architecture Challenge

The 2009 Open Architecture Challenge: Classroom is inviting architects, designers, students, teachers and parents to imagine the classroom of the future.

The Open Architecture Challenge is an open, international design competition. It is hosted once every two years on the Open Architecture Network. This year with partner Orient Global, the challenge is focusing on classroom upgrading and design.

SABD CarSticker Design Competition

• Open to all SABD and Design School students.
• Registration Fee is RM2, to raise fund for SABD Dinner.
• Registration should be done before 16th Feb 2009.
• Theme: Upon students' creativity. Must identify with SABD and Design school
• Design has to include Name/Student ID/Contact No. and incorporate Taylor's logo (No limitation of sizes).
• Design has to be within the area of 30 cm x 20 cm, in only 3 colors, and in 300dpi resolution.
• Contestants are allowed to submit as many designs as they like upon registering.
• There are 2 methods of designing: (i) Photoshop (ii) Sketching (A4 paper)

KLPAC 's Open Day

The klpac venture was an attempt at making three installations each denoting different ideas tied under one theme for klpac’s open day on the 18th of January. It was the brainchild of ms veronica and mr hong to work with the klpac authorities to get us a chance at making art installations.

The first installation focused on the visual impact created by an undulating carpet of ping pong balls that seem as if they are hovering a few feet above ground. When the wind skims through the balls, they rustle in their own hidden tune, as if inviting the spectator to hear the sound of the wind it captures.

The second installation rises from the gravel in a waveform and as it rises, hollow metal tubes cling onto them, creating a landscape of verticality from cylindrical elements that chime in the wind. interactivity with the visitors are considered in this design, as the children run around the tubes, banging into them on occasion of accident, yet creating merry tunes.


The third installation was envisioned as a surreal and glittering chandelier, hung just out of reach from below the staircase and in harmony with the curves from the other two installations. As the light shines through, the translucent straws cavort and tempt the visitor to grasp it, but they never manage (except if they had a long arm). They are under the impression of a world hung upside down, in full majesty of smoke and mirrors.

Those involved in the design phase of the three installations were 20-odd people, from Taylors College Petaling Jaya, while during the construction phase there was a sudden influx of about 100 students doing their studio 1 this semester, bringing much needed extra hands to complete the installations in time.

On the open day itself, many were enthralled with the installations, to the delight of everyone who worked hard for what I would deem as a delightful success in creating art pieces.

orientationday!

The 9th of January 2009 proved to be the peak of the orientation for the new intake of students from the Diploma in Architectural Technology and Foundation in Science of Building Environment. A mixture of international and local students adjourned at the LCS courtyard and were led by the SABD Student Council to Central Market. It is somewhat of a tradition for the seniors to bring the juniors away from the confinements of the lecture hall and instead have an opportunity to mingle with each other.

Around 9 am, a sea of juniors and seniors congregated at The Annexe, Central Market, flooding the once serene hallway with chaos. A brief introduction of the itinerary for the day was delivered by Way Wern, the event manager of the Student Council. To encourage mingling among the students, participants were separated from their cliques into groups for the ice-breaking session. Students were grouped according to the colours of M&M chocolates with the seniors taking part in the activities as well.

Participants were required to complete tasks like pumping, spelling words using their bottom, turning themselves in circles and there was even a competition amongst the groups to create the tallest human pyramid. Frequent bursts of laughter were proof enough of the fun they were having. According to Jonathan Low, Game Master for the day, the main objectives of the session was to instill the importance of teamwork to the juniors, enabling them to mingle with the seniors and ultimately just having a good time.

After everyone has gotten comfortable with each other, the Vice President of the Student Council, David Ooi, shed a few words of wisdom to the participants regarding the SABD student council. He reminded everyone that the council is not made up by the committee members alone, but by all students of the Architectural faculty for each one contributes to the whole effort. David then sent out the groups to the streets of KL to mark the start of their next challenge. Each group had two hours to explore the streets of KL in search of elements that defines the theme 'An Invisible City'.

Without wasting time, the participants prowled into the heart of the city in search for an answer to the theme. They scrutinised every detail, brainstormed on ideas, and even discussed about the menu for lunch; All the while oblivious to the excruciating noon heat. Upon their arrival back to The Annexe, the participants were then required to translate their thoughts and ideas onto a corrugated cardboard and prep together a concept for the presentation. At 3.30 pm, all groups gave their finishing touches to their masterpiece and braced themselves for their very first presentation in tertiary education. As always, the presentation part is always the most insightful yet intimidating session. Each group managed to convincingly deliver what they believed to be 'An Invisible City'.

By the end of the day, after all prizes were delivered and all has been said and done, one couldn't differentiate the juniors from the seniors any longer with them filling the hall with their chattering and laughter. The enthusiasm of the juniors coupled together with the efforts of the Student Council ended the orientation on an inspiring note.
