“A visual richness and intellectual curiosity that aren’t often available to dance.”—The New York Times on Metapolis II

Theater director, choreographer and provocateur, Frédéric Flamand, the artistic director of Ballet National de Marseille, has injected a new aesthetic to the company’s traditional ballet vocabulary. Bringing the company to the United States for the first time under his direction, Flamand stages the North American premiere of Metapolis II, a captivating piece created in collaboration with famed Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid. Set on a futuristic landscape drenched in shifting hues of radiant blue and green light, the high-energy work elegantly synthesizes video (some created in real time) with the dancers’ moving bodies and Hadid’s interconnected silver sculptures. Together they suggest an imaginary urban setting stretched to the max to evoke “the collision and collusion of bodies within urban structures” (The New York Times) and a radical new direction for ballet.
