Onomatopoeia- SABD Booth Competition

HEY EVERYONE!

It's that time of the year again: The Booth Competition is back.

That's right, the time the Student Council starts to bug you to join in the fun is here... again.

To top it off there has been some changes to the competition this year, so please bear with us while we take longer to explain all the details.

But!

Aren't you all excited?

Because this year there is the addition of the Special-MYSTERY-Bonus Prize, besides the RM 700 cash prize! (However to build anticipation, it shall not be explained right at this moment, so yes, you do have to read on).

Besides the awesome new prize, the winning booth will not just be displayed in One Utama but it will also be exhibited during PAM Camp 2010. That's right folks; if you win you'd be able to show off your mad designing skills to the public as well as all the other architecture students in Malaysia. (Don't try to pretend like you don't like showing off, because what kind of design student will you be if you refuse a chance to show the rest of the world that you are, in fact better than them).

In line with this year's PAM Camp's theme 'Archustic', our booth competition will also be having a sound based theme: Onomatopoeia.

If you haven't heard of this word, then pull out a dictionary.

All you have to do now is join in the fun!

PS: Remember the cash prize and the Special-MYSTERY-Bonus Prize as well as your chance to show off without getting all those dirty looks.

Now read on for further details:

Theme:

Onomatopoeia, which is the use of words that seem to imitate the sounds they refer to; or any combination of words in which the sound gives the impression of echoing the sense.

Participants may choose to visually express sounds, or vice versa; or interpret and derive other design concepts based on this theme.

Competition Stages:

Stage 1: Conceptual designs of booths in the form of A3 sketches, with relevant information and design intentions.

Stage 2: Top 5 winning groups will produce detailed drawings (elevations, plan, sections), either hand drawn, or with the aid of AutoCAD, 3DMax, etc. with a 1:10 scale. A prototype model conforming to the same scale must also be produced. Each group will be given 10 minutes to convey their message.

Stage 3: Final winning team will construct a 1:1 scale model in conjunction with the PAM Camp exhibition.

Timeline:

Registration closing: 7 April 2010*

Competition stage 1: 16 April 2010*

Competition stage 2: 7 May 2010*

Rules and Regulations:

• Participating groups must consist of 3 to 5 students. The competition is opened to all SABD students, thus a mixture of students from FNBE, DAT, DID, DQS, and BSc, is encouraged.
• A MYSTERY Bonus prize will be given should the final winning team consist of students from different divisions of SABD.

• Registration fee of RM 2 per participant must be paid upon registration.
• Booth must represent Taylor's University College (i. e. use of SABD/ Taylor's logo).
• Booth design must relate to the theme, design concept is subject to student's interpretation.
• Maximum space area for booth is 2.5m x 2.5m x 2.5m, while minimum is 2m x 2m x 2m. Final model need not make full use of space.
• The booth must function as a structure to display at least 15 students' works (models, storyboards, and other promotional materials, subject to designer's creativity).
• Materials used should be cost effective and readily available.
• Winning team will construct the 1:1 scale model using the RM 400 cash prize, while the remaining RM 700 cash prize will be given after completion of final model.
• Clarity and neatness of submission is up to own discretion, but must be able to communicate ideas of booth design.

Prize:

Grand prize: RM 700 cash prize (and RM 400 cash to build final model), feature in SABD blog, SABD merchandises, certificates ( and additional MYSTERY Bonus prize should the team consist of students from different divisions of SABD).

3 Consolation prizes: Feature in SABD blog, SABD merchandises, certificates.

The first wave of assignments and projects are over...Happy Chinese New Year to all! Enjoy it while you can!

Models for HP's Launching of Its New Line of Printers

For the past two weeks, Taylors had been approached by HP (Hewlett Packet) to construct two city scape models based on our own creativity; one architectural and one conceptual, models of not more than 1.5m x1.5m respectively; for the launching of HP's new printers which was held in Midvalley Hotel last Wednesday! 

We got to know about this project a week before our new semester and had decided to take on this challenge out of mutual agreement and later got a whole lot of others to chip in as well! The whole team had decided to maintain the same road layout for both the architectural and conceptual model so both would seem to morph from the same basics yet diverse in material style.

The architectural model team wanted theirs to be an exact replicate of the modern city with renowned skyscrapers massed in the middle of the city, followed by low-rise and residential areas surrounding it! Everything is done to scale, precision and in a sensible manner with brown boards all the way and indeed it mirrored a city scape well. Work started on the first day of college itself, everyday after classes and went on for a week or so. Everyone enjoyed it totally and had a fun time blasting musics and chatting away while modelling at the same time. Each person completed about one to two skyscrapers of their choice/ design and the rest of the low-rise buildings and signages were done together.     

Led by Kijun Lo, the team consists of Felix, Rynn, JasonOoi, Megan, SuYiean, Stacie, Jonathan, Krystal and Fiona, all from Diploma Semester 5.

As for the conceptual model team, they had to come up with something futuristic and out of the norm; an architecture that would create a 'WOW' factor, yet maintaining the idea of creating a sensible and realistic city scape without creating a whole lot of mess. So, the team decided to explore further with the use of computer parts as building materials; collecting and dismantelling old computers from friends and putting them into good use. The team, led by Jonathan Low, with the assistance of Marie, Kenny, Shauwn, Joseph, ChooiSi, Alex, JasonGoh, Dennis and Julian; a mixture of Diploma Semester 3,4 and 5; indeed had great fun trying to fit different parts together, forming building-like structures and skyscrapers as shown below! In the same line, it is sort of a replica of the architectural model as well, creating two different models in different materials. So far, only around 6-7 computers were used in this project.

FNBE January Intake Orientation 2010 !

As the indigo welkin changed its hue and became aglow with subtle shades of yellow, it marked the advent of a new day dawning bright and warm. An exuberant morning; the firmament was heavenly, and nothing could dampen the spirits of our new SABD comrades who were coming in droves for the orientation program organized specifically for them. Voices rose in a crescendo in the multipurpose hall and before long, the hall was packed.

We first began with an ice-breaking session. The activity devised was a dancing activity whereby participants had to take turns dancing to music in the centre of a human circle and the surrounding participants were required to imitate them. Amid the peals of laughter, clamours of euphoria and exhilarating beats of music, it was in the aim to engender a sense of togetherness amongst them, and certainly, it has proved to be a marvellous social lubricant.

What ensued after that was a slew of intriguing games: the Longest Line (build the longest possible line within a limited period of time using their belongings and also their bodies), Fiction (exhale the breathings of their artistic minds by drawing symbolic objects on a piece of paper and then creatively craft a story that is relevant to be presented), Link Up (solve and untangle a human chain), and last but not least, the Tower of Terror (build a structure as tall and stable as possible utilizing satay sticks, straws and rubberbands, based on a concept generated beforehand) – which was the highlight of the day.

Overall, the event was a fruitful success! Everyone got to broaden their social circles, understand the significance of teamwork and more importantly, all of them had lots of fun!

The event ended at precisely one, fraught with a mellow sense of esprit de corps, rapture and the glow of their energy.
