RUMI 2009!!!!!! 7th-11th of June!

Architectural Workshop is an annual event organised under the auspices of PAM! It gathers the architecture fraternity that comprise of students from various architecture schools in Malaysia as participants, with involment of academicians as advisors, guest speakers and panel judges.

The 21st Architectural Workshop Theme - R.u.m.i 2009!!

Derivatives of the RUMI theme are the following Malay words that are associated to the conception of architecture:

pengantara - to mediate

rangsangan minda - to simulate the mind; and

pengzahiran idea - to translate ideas into reality.

Rumi is the ROMANISED Malay language characters (abjad), carefully and intellectually composed. Inevitably, good writings are influential - they reveal silent thoughts and propogate ideas.

The relevance of the Workshop theme - RUMI lies in the capacity of the rumi alphabets to translate, mediate and eventually preserves or document ideas and experiences. This is liken to architecture and architects! An architect is an agent that translates and realises the hopes and aspirations of the client and society at large into a tangible physical entity.

The workshop offers Master Forum, Competitions and Workshop Modules that are designed to simulate discussions on current issues related to the design and creation of architecture.

Amid all the current architectural conformity, we still find amazement in the simple,
calm in the unselfconscious. We still understand the value of the simplest fundamentals,
which, when wielded with intelligence and the integrity of process, produces remarkable
work: we understand the importance of getting back to basics.

It is time to be less consumptive and more inventive, to do more with less.

The thread of continuity which runs through DATUM:KL 2009 concerns the relevant, the
elegance of basic design, a time for reflection and a reassessment of those intrinsic
values we as architects apply to our work.

ZPrinter

3D Printing is now officially available for everyone (the wealthy). Ever since the 0707 batch landed in awe and envy in NUS School of Design and Environment looking at the super-big laser model printer, we've been wondering why there's no company out there develop the tinier, more economical version and sell it to to the desperate architecture students who cut their fingers on regular basis.

Thanks to Z Corporation, God answer our prayers. ZPrinter^® 310 Plus and ZPrinter 450 multicolor printer are printing the model out of our computer for US$ 19,900. For those who have the budget, you might as well grab one and be BFFs. For those who don't, let's pray that other companies come into the field and have a price war or something until the price drops some more. Well, we still have many years of study to come (if this is a good thing).

Booth Design Competition 09

hey guys!
seeing that crit'll be happening on the 18 and 19 May 09. the submission for the drawings (sections, plans, elevation) is extended to the 25th May 09 (one week later). weehehe..so,

Car Sticker Result?

Hey guys, sorry for the super long wait for the car sticker competition's result but we have met some complications regarding the result with the panel of judges and might just surprise you with the verdict.

Until the organising committee receives the final list of winners (or lack thereof), just keep your fingers crossed! :)

March 09' Intake Orientation

Wondering why there are more people in the college these days? Seen many unfamiliar faces?
The reason is simply because..
new intakes!

The orientation of the March 2009 intake was held on the 4th of April 2009. The venue was none other than a popular tourist spot and a familiarized placed - Central Market.


A total of 39 juniors showed up that day. In fact the total of helpers [seniors] that showed up that day could easily mount up to the number of juniors.
Nevertheless, everyone was energetic and had their spirits up and going!
After gathering everyone in the hall, the juniors were briefed with the ice breakers of the day.

There were 3 ice breakers:

1. ask 38'

Since there were less people than expected, the seniors played along.

2. newspaper game [fold, fold and more folding ]

Other than generating creativity to fit into a small newspaper, the game also helped to create bonds within the group members. The funniest part is when people come up with the most ludicrous strategy, just to win!

A very long and confusing, but rhyming passage was passed down from the first to the last person; whereby the last person will have to write down the passage.

The highlight of this game was definitely the punishment. The losing group must sing twinkle twinkle little star with dance motion.

What's next?
The main event !

The main event requires the students to walk around kl to get inspirations in order to create a banner of the theme " Self Expression". They were given 1 and a half hour which is also inclusive of their lunch time.
They were equally divided into groups, whereby each group having a senior to guide and monitor them.

Most of the groups decided to get their inspirations from Petaling Street, which was within walking distance.

It was difficult to choose because all the banners were creatively designed and had it's own uniqueness.
Finally, a decision was made based on the chosen theme for that day- Self Expression.

At the end of the day, it's all about socializing, and not about winning or losing.
Thus, everyone is a winner!
Every group was awarded with a token of appreciation. The three winning groups were awarded with hampers of goodies!

The Senior and Junior Crit session/discussion/ chit chatting or whatever you call it is ON! If you are interested, please join us at Studio 3, Block B1, Level 8 this Friday. Oh yea, the thing will be starting from 10 a.m. till 12 p.m. or until we finish. Do bring your sketches, models, plans, sections, elevations, presentation board bla bla bla(everything you want to show.) and lets just have fun helping each other out.
