Senior-Junior Crit Session

So what do you guys say about senior-junior informal crit session?

We'll have a group discussion on a selected friday at a specific time and a designated venue where you may bring along any related conceptual models, drawings, sketches, etc, present your ideas, thus, receive comments, constructive criticisms and ultimately, gain some insights from fellow students.

It will be a non-hierarchy session: no separation of higher and lower studios. Our objective is mainly to help you broaden your perspectives and hopefully inspire you to come up, or improve on your design.

if you're interested, drop a line!

Sun Jars

A jam jar that you can use to store the sun. Well...sort of.

It...

and...

It's an original design by Tobias Wong and I think it makes a pretty cool night light.

It's made with a traditional Mason jar, solar cells, a rechargeable battery and energy saving LED lamps. You have to leave it out in direct sunlight for a few hours and by night time the 3 LED lights should be good to go anywhere you'd like it to be placed.

Components : Glass jar, solar cell, battery and LED lights.
Size : 100X100X160mm

If the weathers gloomy like how it currently rains daily here in KL, you can always use the normal battery charger for it.

You can get them at SUCK UK

Cheers, enjoy your weekend!

p/s: If you're interested in blogging for the society do drop us a line. We always welcome people to blog for us. No matter if you're in ID/CM/QS or whichever semester you are in.

March09' Degree Orientation

Report by: Lo Ki Jun
Photo captions by: Felix Saw

Recycle, sustain, go green! These rather undervalued perceptions of the environmentally friendly embody the theme for this year’s March intake degree student’s orientation, marking another successful orientation for Taylor’s SABD.

The journey began early for most of the students, experiencing the intimacy of public transport from college to The Annexe, Central Market. Becoming almost customary to hold the annual preface induction of architecture at this particular venue, a host of activities were planned for the students to flabbergast and wittily amuse. Indeed, today represents the noble intention of associating and familiarizing seniors and lecturers alike to the fresh and unsullied erectionists-to-be.

Upon arrival, a sneak preview of the first activity, “Stepping Numbo”, was delectably enthusing the students as they ponder at the pieces of newspaper filled with numerals with curiosity. The plan was to have students walk through numbers (1, 2, 3, …) in order as they move simultaneously together within their groups.

well that's Sophia, getting ready for shoe hunting spree.

Groups were hygienically divided with seniors randomly selecting from the very trendy assortment of shoes, each belonging to a particular student. Accordingly, it was physically comedic to see the actions of the students making their way through the perverted arrangement of the newspaper course akin to a city’s urban planning gone wrong.

well, if you don't understand how this game works. we'll show you. no problem. *snap* video please.

A few minutes plus a rather patriotic reciting later, the students adjourned from Central Market, marking the commencement of the second activity in place, “It’s so Fuglicious”. In this activity, the ogle-eyed newbies were required to re-design, re-innovate, re-invent, re-use, and re-express street amenities or furniture from their creativity and originality with the materials we provide them. In addition to the provided corrugated board, teams were allowed to hoist/purchase any recyclable/non-recyclable material they find during their excursion, consequently giving a hand to the local MBKL. Iconic local landmarks such as Masjid Negara, Petaling Street, and Puduraya were experientially engaged to coherently and convincingly identify the many fixtures in the city. Undoubtedly, even the raging heat of the iconic local sun could not damper the sheer gusto of our newly recruited comrades.

this is Kairi, she forced me to take a jumpshot of her, in the holy masjid.
it's really memalukan.

bagpipes at VI. luckily they didn't brought them back..

Back with an array of very ‘green’ materials such as branches, plastic bags, bottles, plus a signboard seized harmlessly, the aspiring designers hastily began deliberating and churning their ideas and proposals. No man was left behind as each and every member within a group had a task in hand. Whether it was slicing corrugated boards, adhesing McDonald’s cup covers, or painting signboards, the impression of the place could have been so easily mistaken as one of an architectural firm.

Parking sign, to, Barking sign.

tree branches, not from my mouth, but yes, tree branches.

stuffing stuffs into the holes. hmmmmmmmm.

aha, now we know who's the odd one. di-outcast-ed. hmm.

woooooooooooot, hello hello there.
looks like we got some visitors here.

After hours of guidance and paparazzi-like photography, the seniors called it time and forth the very first crit for the orators of this intake. All impressed and all astonished, but in the end, it was the colossal presence of the cock that landed Group "Vincent + Aiman" winners of this activity with their water feature design.

sitting at a higher platform staring at them presenting.
yes this is how the nice seniors pressurize them.

Third place winner also the best presenters.
"Felix + Rachel + Mui Ching" group. And the Recycle Bin.
Congrats, Carol and Ming.

Second place winner.
"Yan Ying + Li Yuan" group. And the shelter design.

yup yup, the Champions. The bird feeder.

there there, Aiman and Vincent..... and Zaki.

And the respective group pictures :
[ sorry that i don't have the other 2 group pictures.]

yes people i understand. i get it.
go ahead, print it out in A3 size,
and punch it straight at the center of the paper.

Prizes of worthy were presented to the winners, formal and candid group shots were taken, subsequently marking the end of this very eventful day. The student council hopes that this new batch of intakes thoroughly enjoyed their time in experiencing architecture the SABD way. Puns aside, we sincerely hope that we left you hungry for more.
