Train Project Episode 1

It was just right after the CNY holidays where lih jiunn started pressuring all of us whether or not we should join the Hilton Train Project competition. At that time, my group had submission, and since we so stress that time, jufri and his SMART thinking agreed to help out, so we all also have to agree lor, and then thats where it all started. As ignorant and naïve kids we were, we all were in for a treat, and that is where all the secrets, betrayal, and friendship began…”yar right !”

So, we then broke ourselves into sections or teams (graphics, autocad, modelling, and design/concept) and started gathering people…We got a great response in the beginning, but started to diminish as the days went by…

The first stage was the conceptualizing team and the autocad team which were headed by lih jiunn and adam/alex. After all the numerous planning and organization, they came out with an idea of having a Christmas in 4 different seasons…tropical, bohemian, dessert, and winter.

Then, after the design has been done, we had not heard from some of the design team anymore, maybe it was for the better…more freedom for the modeling and graphic team then, which was leaded by me and felicia/hui xian.

When we had the meeting to discuss on the outcome of the overall idea scheme, lih jiunn actually misinterpreted the whole entire competition requirements as she said that there will be a platform which lifts the entire train model. So I asked then, what did they put over these platforms…she then answered, they usually stick pictures and all so I then misinterpreted it in my own terms and thought that why not make the platform more interesting and lively rather than having pictures…so I then sketched the idea out, and we then came out with an underground theme which was an inspiration from Lord of the Rings…we wanted to have gold mines and dragons…The underground team then consist of khai ling, audy, and thomas.

Initially, the previous years actually place the model above the timber platform and places green tapestries around it…lih jiunn totally told me something so different, and I totally exaggerated it even more…and so, that is how we got a twin deck…it was all a misconception as we thought it was compulsory to have two floors actually…haiz…it was not even our idea…and we won because of it, HOHOHO !

The beginning stages of the modelling was a bit tidious as we weren't really sure how to do a real n detailed train model. So we just played around, we build the landscape like architecture students using cardboard. The others were mostly doing the christmas decor, trees, and the tropical house which was leaded by Celdric. Then, it was adam and jufri who really helped out a lot by staying overnight to clay the model despite the fact that adam was fetching yin ling and lih jiunn around the whole day shopping for small miniatures for the model. Thanks Man !

Then we waited for the thing to dry, and we started to worry even more as the model started to curve and crack, but we just went on. It was the help of adora, mak, and andrew later on in the painting. We got some help during the process of drawing and detailing the model later on from the semester one, but later on never see them already...anyway, we then just did it ourselves.

Just two days before the submission, i was a Sunday i remembered, we then finished the entire thing like around 11 and we were the first to see the lights on at night for the twin deck train model, it was amazing. Lighting was done by thomas and alex. It was superb...then we makan later at around 11 something...so late d...

It is then competition week, but i shall not elaborate about it as my friend has talked about it before, so tune in next time fore the next episode where we really had to work hard to win this competition, and that is where we started to really despise one another and also at the same time get used to one another...finally, i posted something !

Hilton Train Display finally displayed!!!! a long thank you thesis-.-

All of us are so proud on this project when everything is finally up and trains running on site!
This is the FIRST huge project done by architecture students, i repeat "architecture students".
Famous for 24/7 being busy and EXTRA dedicated to assignments, all of us managed to make this project a successful one!
muah! i want to kiss all of those who worked really hard with us, including those who volunteered during the last few days.

Thru this project, we understand architecture students are:
1. last minute pro
they work most effective at the very last minute.
2. robots
they either don't need sleep or they can work 20hours a day.
3. mini constructors
everything is possible to construct, from miniature buildings to plants, to human clothes and food-.-

Thanks to all who had made this possible. Very very touching u know!
I'll say one by one la.

Thanks to ALL in management team: myself, Amanda Ooi, Hui Xian, Shien, Xe Wei, Keong.
Although you all are not in the model team, but you all helped out.
Thanks Amanda for having photographic mind, then she can remember all the orders given by the leaders. thanks for being so effective ya!
Thanks to Shien, Xe Wei, Hui Xian, for so la ti do... ehem, Doing all the odd jobs and managing other stuffs other than the model itself.
Thanks to Keong for his big mouth and helping to coordinate the leaders.

Thanks to ALL leaders from each season: Adora, Esther Lau, Rachel Wong, Cheryl Choo, Mo Lee Hua, Jun Hao, Shahira, Yin Ling, Ashley Leong, Andrew Chow, Celdrick Wong, Bryan Sia, Chern Xi, Hann.
Thanks for your dedication and commitment. I really really love u all for not leaving the project halfway, and stuck to it like UHU glue until the train model is done.
And also listen to mummy nagging to u all to finish the work-.-" I know you all have been trying your best and also balancing with assignments, but I still nag and scold u all. Thanks for bearing with it~.~
Thanks for not being lazy and also not being a selfish ass who just care about assignments only.
Thanks for sacrificing your grades for the train project. I'm really really sorry because I couldn't get better services for u all from college as in grades increment.
Thanks for having limitless great ideas in making the original idea even better.
Thanks for planning for your season and come out which such great detailings!
Thanks also for not being so money-minded. Thanks for all the passion.
You all rock!!! batu batu saya yang tersayang~

Thanks to Engineering team: Felicia Lee, Thom, Niven, Mak, Min Kang, Jufri.
Thanks for spoiling your eyes to pateri the electronic boards, connecting the wires, going in and out of the landscape just to pull the wires.
Thanks for making our huge mountain standing up!
Thanks for bearing with the pain to screw the 2 little screws at each track connector.
Thanks for being patient when the train doesn't move or derail and you all have to find out the problem.
Thanks to those who also helped out the poor engineering team because of the lack of manpower.

Special special thanks to our handsome uncle tim!
He made our train choo choo choo choo running, siding us when we are bullied by adults.
He sacrificed his work in real life just to help us in the engineering part.
And also his 2 workers, thanks for being here with us although you all are busy with your work.

Special spicy thanks to our midget Ms Shereen.
Always bouncing up and down to help us in the model, protect us from being bullied by adults, update us when there's spies trying to get a hand on our money, give extensions for assignments when we need it, tell off ppl who just want to get some glamor from ppl who really worked hard.
Thanks for belanja-ing the many dinners and lunches when you see us tired and worked so hard for the project.
Our powderful Shereen has been a great support when we feel weak.

Thanks to Mr. Tony for supporting us all the way in the project and trying to ask lecturers to be more understanding with us.

Thanks to Mo Lee Hua's uncle, an electrician, to help teaching the kayukayu architecture students who have TOTALLY no idea on electric at all. It makes us work faster.

Thanks to ALL design comm students and scholarship students.
Thanks for the delicate modelling skills, the eye for aesthetics and detailing and also being a perfectionist.
Special special thanks to the few design comm & scholarship students, Linda, Menawan, Marco, Nicholas, Pam, Sophia, Jo, Diana, Yin Lih who really helped in the model and not let us die with unfinished train model-.-" If i missed out any of you, I'm so sorry.

Thanks to volunteers like Abu from Unity College, Min Kang, Jufri, Lih Jiunn's mum, Yin Ling's mum, Lee hua/Cheryl's mum, Alicia (keong's friend), Van Yenn, Amily Voon, Felicia's bro - Shaun, Zen, Zen's friend, did i forget anymore ppl??~.~
for the last few days, thanks for staying up late with us to finish up the model. Although you all are in a holiday mood, you all came and worked for long hours and really helped us tremendously.
Thanks to those aunties who also helped out in the model although your eyes not good already and also parents who stayed up so late just to wait for their kids finishing the model and fetch them home.

Not to forget, thanks to hilton ppl: Mr Michael, Jane Wong, Mr. Ravi and team, Elaine and Melonie, Housekeeping department.
Thanks to Mr Michael Nagel for treating us twice at Paya Serai and also thanks for always smiling to us despite everyone is worried like hell that we cannot finish the model. Thanks for keeping that pressure away from us and let us concentrate in finishing the train model.
Thanks to Mr Ravi and technicians for cementing, cutting wood, connecting all the wires, fulfill our requests, helping us to deal with ppl who give us hard moments and extra work.
Thanks to the cleaners who have to bear with the cement tracks left by ignorant students and mop the lobby non stop.
Thanks to the cafeteria for providing free food for us in hilton too.

Thanks to all those people whom I've left out in this post.
OK LAH, i nag finish already.

Lih Jiunn feels very sad lah....It's a great great memory when sem 6 leaves Malaysia. I truly cherish those moments, we will definitely miss every single person here.
when lah can we ever meet up and get our asses busy again? Melbourne?
not on train project again, but something else lighter lah. nightmare-.-

Lih Jiunn loves how sem 4, sem 5, sem 6 in the committee come together as one, worked really hard to accomplish something. From day 1 to the very last day, you all have been so entertaining and lighten the mood, despite stress from assignments and fatigue.
This is such a glorious and active year for SABD.
Because of train project, juniors and seniors became close, unlike the previous years where every semester don't talk to each other at all. Friends forever!! weee...
Ask us out to yamcha before we leave for australia la, ok?;)

Lih Jiunn.

p/s: those who took really great pictures of the train model, please don't be selfish and post them here to show off our work, ok? :P

WALAO! Lih Jiunn just wrote a thank you thesis o.O

Scene #1

I shall hide my way around Taylor's College Petaling Jaya. Running around collecting gossips and secrets.. secrets that lies deep inside the studios. I disappear into thin air, as I achieved the skills of David Copperfield throughout the years, knowing studios have WONDERFUL scenery of the LDP Highway. I made my own PhantomMobile, Batman loaned me his Batmobile. (I just rename it anyways, back to the story) I shall not be known, seen or heard. I'm invisible to everyone..

BREAKING NEWS

OMG this is damn demotivating lor.

Apparently Frank Gehry is getting sued by MIT for building design flaws.
You can read the article here http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Business/2007/11/07/mit_sues_gehry_citing_flaws_in_center/9451/

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

So imagine if something as great as Gehry can get sued, how on earth are we all going to survive lah?! Build blocks all our lives meh.

Sorry, that was the panic talking. But isn't it so appaling! Knowing that we architects have limitless liabilities is stressful enough, we can get sued over.. over anything at all as long as we're alive. Yes that's true, I talked to the first architect dude who brought me around his office and he seemed to drill that fact in alot. I guess that this IS reminder that architecture ain't all designing buildings in the clouds (like my Engineering friends always say - damn they'd be having a good laugh now) it all comes down to practicality too. There are only so many ways to designing and overcoming solutions, but bear in mind the workability of it too. Design for the building's sake.

Hope ya'll are hanging in there with final submissions and all around the corner, just focus on the positive - be optimistic and keep your eyes on the goal - the HOLIDAYS after! Hah as for me, it'll be blisssss at Bali. heh.

OH btw, just a quick announcement:

We'd appreciate very much if we could get some artistic hands on the Hilton Christmas Train Project. Those who are good in art, painting, detailing - you will have one heck of a time. A GOOD time ah, so please dont let the overwhelming size of the model scare you. Just let any of us from the committee know ya! Thanks :)

AND ALL THE BEST peeps! And most of all, remember to have fun.

Quantifying a Surveyor's Life - Professional Profession?

It has been quite some time since the first day of work in a consultantcy firm. We used to hear that QSes are not that keen with other professionals in the building industry. From my own experience during my Taylor's stint, I totally disagree with that. We have a great community in Taylor's which offers lots of special moments that most of us share. We talked about uniting students, people around us and saving our precious friendships.

However, in the real world out here, it is a hell to what you call heaven during college times. Ask a QS friend of yours that share your Building Services class or Construction or even Structures class. If they are doing take-off, and found there's discrepancies in the drawings, what do they do? List down in query list and make assumption. Great, it is a good approach, but have they ever come to a list of 100+ queries just for a single element of work? This happens and it is still ongoing. You can never find a perfect drawing but at least we expect a level of accuracy and consistency from them. Dimensions are incorrect its alright, but even the drawing number and revision number does not tally, how can you not blame us to hate the engineers for not being professional enough?

We, QSes are taken advantage of, and we are used by the industry to check drawings for errors instead of costing and pricing them. Where are we heading to if this trend goes on and on?

Activity Week Presentation

HEY ALL!

Noticed that some of you have been enquiring about the presentation regarding the trips held during Activity Week. Anyway, have looked into it with some help (Thanks, Ms. Shereen!) and these are the details, if interested:

Date : Wednesday, 03/09/07 (tomorrow lah)
Venue : Level 8, B1-08-04
Time : About 11am to 1pm, however it most probably would run late - knowing the Taylors trend.

There will be presentations from the students who went to Hanoi, Seoul, Beijing, Sabah, India and others who I've missed, if I've missed. After that, there will be a prize-giving ceremony for the Hanoi peeps (apparently best presentation among the Hanoi peeps would win something REALLY EXTRAVAGANT), so hey! It should be something worth watching, no? I also heard there would be some sort of dance performance by the Beijing trip students, too ;) No promises tho.

Also, the exhibition of pictures and models and what nots will be ongoing till about 2-3pm, so maybe come for the exhibition only also would be good enough already lah.
Everyone's invited, come & see what we've learnt during the trips, the fun we had, and the embarassing moments relived :p

Asymptote Architecture announces the design of Penang Global City Center

Asymptote’s design for the PGCC complex is centered on the idea of creating a new and powerful image for the city of Penang and the new initatives associated with the development of the Northern Corridor of Malaysia. The design achieves its elegance and stature through the simultaneous embrace of natural landscapes and contemporary urbanism. The PGCC will become a vital new precinct that complements and enhances the unique characteristics that typify Penang as a remarkable island metropolis. The design of the iconic towers in particular draws inspiration from not only the lushness and drama of the surrounding mountains and seascapes, but also from the rich and diverse cultural heritage that makes up the Malaysian nation and Penang in particular. The forms of the two towers are comprised of both horizontal and vertical elements: sculpted horizontal components move across the plinth, rise up and transform into articulated vertical structures. Set against the backdrop of the nature reserve of Penang Hill, the twisting, glass façades of the towers “perform” various surface effects—reflecting, refracting and distorting views of Penang, the surrounding landscape and the seascape beyond. The vast, cascading plinth, which functions as a public plaza with multiple gathering spaces, are venues for the performing arts center, convention center and various facilities for residential, office and urban life.
